The EU has specific guidance for EU citizens moving with or joining family members, including non-EU spouses and children. If the sponsor is not an EU citizen, the destination country’s national family-reunification rules may apply. Other relatives and partnership forms can have different conditions.
The EU free-movement family route is especially relevant when an EU citizen moves to or lives in another EU country. If the EU citizen moves to their own country, national family rules usually need to be checked instead; confirm the route before gathering documents.
Do document preparation early
Civil-status documents can be needed to prove a relationship or a child’s parentage. Ask the authority whether it accepts the original, a multilingual standard form, a certified translation or legalization; requirements differ by document and country.
Handle immigration and local registration separately
A non-EU family member may need an entry visa, residence card or other national step even when the EU citizen has a right to reside. Separately, each household member may need to be included in the municipality’s address-registration process.

Does a residence card from one country transfer with the family?

Can we register the address before every permit is issued?
Address registration and immigration processing are separate, but their order and required documents vary. Ask both the immigration authority and municipality before booking appointments.
