Munich’s deadline includes a relevant abroad-resident exception
The city states the general rule as registration within 14 days after moving into a home. Its service page separately explains that someone whose usual residence is abroad and who is not registered in Germany becomes subject to registration only after three months. If the stay will exceed that period, confirm the date the two-week filing window starts with the responsible office.
Online filing is limited to a main residence
Munich lists both an online service and in-person registration at a Bürgerbüro. The online option is only for a main residence; a secondary residence cannot be registered through that service. Registration before the actual move-in date is not allowed.
Requirements for online identification can change. Use the current city page and linked national service to check whether your documents and situation qualify.
Bring the housing-provider confirmation
The city lists valid identity documents for each person who must register and a housing-provider or owner confirmation showing the move-in. Munich also provides a form for explaining that the confirmation is missing; use that official route instead of assuming a rental agreement replaces the confirmation.
If more than one person is moving, check the city’s household instructions and prepare documents for each person.
Keep your confirmation for tax follow-up
After a first registration in Germany, Munich says the tax identification number is normally sent automatically by the Federal Central Tax Office after about two to four weeks. Check that names and the detailed address are correct and that the mailbox is clearly labelled.
